FollowUp: Yes SecondYearWorkingDetailsI reduced my hrs from full-time (40/week) to part-time (32/week). Although I was in a sr mgt position, my responsibilities were not as demanding as in previous positions. I intentionally took a different, less demanding position during my enrollment at LIOS in order to balance workload demands with school demands. ThirdYearWorkingDetailsDo you mean the quarter following my last module? I tried to finish my thesis in order to graduate on time but found it impossible - it required more time/work than I could dedicate. I tried to finish by the end of January (after my school year ended the previous Oct.) but still found it required more time/work than I could dedicate. I took off Feb. thru mid-April because I had a baby. Then picked it back up mid-April and finished by mid-June. My orals were in July with a minor content addition required and I graduated in September. I had stopped working at the end of January to go on maternity leave and did not work while I finished my paper. I don't think I would have completed it if I had gone back to work - I think I would still be working on it. I literally dedicated every spare minute to getting it done. PriorityFactorsWell, I had a baby in February so my personal priorities necessarily shifted for a couple of months. Also, needing some down time away after completing my second year (away from LIOS and to myself) was a factor. I don't know that any factors would have increased my motivation - I was highly motivated. Factors that could have increased my ability to complete my thesis more quickly include the following two major points: - less rigid content and formatting specifications - structuring the 2nd year so that assigned papers became chapters in my thesis (i.e., the change mgt paper would need to be relevant to my thesis and would become a chapter with few necessary modifications; the PTP would also become a chapter with few necessary modifications; etc.). ImpactOfPolicyChangeI harbor some resentment about having to pay nearly $500/quarter for the add'l three quarters it took me to complete my thesis. The additional nearly $1500 was tough for me, personally, and added salt to my wound since I was highly motivated to finish on time but despite my best efforts (and a great deal of time devoted to finishing), I needed more time. My first sense of impact after reading Pam's letter is that it is financially punitive and puts all the responsibility on the student instead of looking at what role/responsibility LIOS as the broader system may have on this situation. I think that I would have had a more positive personal reaction if it had been more balanced - i.e., "heres your part" AND "here's what WE are going to do differently." WhatWouldMotivateMeSee my answer to 2e.... "I don't know that any factors would have increased my motivation - I was highly motivated. WhatAlreadyMotivatedMeThis is a little unclear - do you mean complete your thesis on time? Or by December of my "3rd year"? I think I've already answered this, above. ThirdYearWantsMight have been helpful to have offered groups comprised of my track classmates so we could exchange ideas, offer support, etc. Maybe some kind of extension of the Pro Consult concept. FinishedAppreciatedn/a FactorsWithinMyControl- A super supportive husband/family. - An adjunct who communicated clearly re: his response times as well as his working relationship with me. I was always clear about where I stood with him in terms of the process. - Having an adjunct who was readily available by phone and email. Even if he wanted at least a week to return drafts, he was always available to talk and discuss the process at any time. He responded to my communications with him within 24 hrs (usually within a few hours). - Having an adjunct who was committed to his working relationship with me. Even when I didn't agree with his POV or choices, he was always open to dialogue and I got the sense that he cared about the quality of his relationship with me. - Not working (coincidentally being on maternity leave from my work). FactorsWithinLIOSControlSee my response to 2e. Also.... I have the sense that the MTFP paper is a rite of passage, sort of like boot camp. If you can survive the frustrations of the process after already completing all the demands of the two-year program, you become an "officer." This seems out of balance after having completed the coursework - like a huge add'l expectation that is not required of SC track. My sense of the MTFP paper process is that it is pedagogical in tone which seems out of place after my experience in the program which seemed inherently androgogical. There seems to currently be less dialogue and more authority saying "here is what I expect, now do it." This was pretty de-motivating at a number of points. FacultyFeedback- Less rigid content and formatting expectations. Create a way for the student to feel that his/her authentic voice is heard (while still giving appropriate guidance/feedback). - Create Pro Consult-type groups of 3rd years (and beyond) trying to finish their papers. For exchange of ideas and support. - Be clear that unless you are not working and/or don't have kids or other family/personal demands and/or are willing to apply a grueling nearly singular focus on your paper/school to the near exclusion of everything else ... it seems virtually impossible to finish within 2 years. GeneralNotesI ended up changing thesis projects early in my 2nd year. At one pt, it was questionable whether I would have a project secured by the start of the 2nd module in my 2nd year. Partly because of the pressure to have something lined up or else be bumped to a different program (basically be "held back" a quarter), I rushed thru the contracting phase and did not catch what were clearly red flags in retrospect re: my project. This is a tough pt - I know there have to be some parameters about getting projects lined up so a student is on the same general timeline as his/her classmates, but I also think there needs to be some accomodation to quality (and/or unique conditions) of the projects as much as the timeline. FollowUp: Yes SecondYearWorkingDetailsMy employment demands were such that I had very little time/energy to spend on my thesis. ThirdYearWorkingDetailsMy employment demands continued to severely limit my ability to complete my thesis in the third year. However, several months into my third year, I radically changed my employment situation, cutting my hours by over 65% with a commensurate drop in work responsibilities. This worked. PriorityFactorsEconomy and marital balance were influential factors with deeper, and I believe stronger, internal processes taking place within my self. My professional situation has mirrored economic trends for the last few years. Throughout 2001 and 2002, I spent increasingly more time and energy around financial concerns, e.g., working long hours for low pay and selling my house. From a family systems perspective, my wife recently completed a long LIOS "third year." So there is a complementarity dynamic feeding this as well. Beneath all this is an organic process that is uniquely mine, including FOO issues, e.g., do I deserve a Master's degree? ImpactOfPolicyChangeNo impact. WhatWouldMotivateMe
WhatAlreadyMotivatedMeI don't want to continue paying $450/quarter for continuing studies. I see completion of the thesis as my next step in moving forward professionally. ThirdYearWantsThe paradox: As a 3rd year, I have passed through much of the fire, yet through much of my 3rd year I did not feel strong. I had something to offer the community as a result of my ongoing experience, yet I felt a need to draw in. As a 2nd year, I was mainly interested in my own process, my own role in the community. I did not want 3rd years stealing my thunder. However when I opened to 3rd years, I was enriched and picked up valuable information. For example, naps are good. I think the boundary of the 2nd year and 3rd year groups is key. To work at that boundary would, in my opinion, take humility on the part of the 2nd years and courage of the 3rd years. I believe the work is alive at that boundary and the 2nd years could gain actionable data while the 3rd years recovered their strength. FactorsWithinMyControlThe discipline to sit down and write. The discipline to constrain my research within manageable spans of breadth and depth. FactorsWithinLIOSControlMore clarity on expectations regarding the writing. I think the track resource manual is adequate as is. However, I think more time spent with it in curriculum with the goal of increasing clarity would help. FacultyFeedbackGeneralNotesFollowUp: Yes SecondYearWorkingDetailsI worked 1/2 time, for pay; I also consider parenting work, with no pay involved. My biggest issue was lack of writing and expressive skills, coupled with difficulties presented by material in the last modules. I had some major personal development issues that needed attention. ThirdYearWorkingDetailsI had curriculum to repeat-and fit in between work and the holidays. The thesis could wait. ImpactOfPolicyChangetotal fear. Why have I not seen this until now? Now I'm angry. Part of my thesis is about communication- and this constitutes an appalling lack of communication-from the lead instructor of CCO herself.I expect more functional leadership behavior from LIOS. Heal thyself, LIOS. WhatWouldMotivateMeA few kick off meetings would help-pull together those who are writing. How strange that learning in community ceases with Mod 7. When tuition isn't paid, the welcome mat is removed. GeneralNotesI wonder if there's a difference between completion of winter track and the other tracks. And I wonder if there's a correlation between Track Leads leadership styles, and the willingness to stay engaged with students, and vice versa-students willingness to stay engaged w/ instructors. Just a hunch. FollowUp: Yes SecondYearWorkingDetailsNot employed, thank goodness~! ThirdYearWorkingDetailsPriorityFactorsDoing Action Research in Fall 2002 on "on time graduation" helped me a lot. I heard from the 2nd years what was concerning them and it allowed me to plan for this year. Because I am unemployed, it is a high priority for me to finish so I can go back into the work world with a completed degree and not having an MTP hanging over my head. ImpactOfPolicyChange I didn't read the policy until today. I feel irritated about the possible additional financial burden, but that is more because it's a surprise to me. My motivation to finish the MTP is internal to me. WhatWouldMotivateMe
WhatAlreadyMotivatedMeI intend to complete my thesis on time, but it is not guaranteed yet. I'm behind compared to the schedule that was proposed earlier in the year. What contributed to my motivation to finish: not wanting it hanging over my head - not wanting my memory about the project to fade, which would make it even harder to finish; wanting to get out and apply my skills and earn money with the degree completed; having the time now (choosing to stay unemployed until I'm finished). It was a confusing project that required similar synsethizing skills to the MTP. I have more confidence that I can write the MTP because I wrote the PTP. FactorsWithinMyControlScheduling my time and energy. I have wiped my social calendar clean so I can focus on writing. I'm taking good care of my health -yoga every morning, eating good food along with junk food. Also, I'm in contact with a greater spirit - I pray a lot and ask for guidance. I'm trying to do this project in cooperation with the universe, instead of trying to control what happens. It is a great challenge for me to let go and trust that the right thing will happen! I ask for help from my colleagues or adjunct or friends when I need it. FactorsWithinLIOSControlI think Lorellette [Librarian] could give some workshops on how to do research. She could use another computer in the LIOS library that has access to online databases and show people some tricks. I also think she should have a copy of EndNote software for writing in the APA style and creating references. It would encourage people for writing articles in the future. Sean Hatt provided us with a Word MTP "template". It's been terrific to use in formating all the italics, headings etc. Perhaps LIOS could provide it or put it on the Web site. [Ashley's note: This would be Debbie Vogel, to be added here: http://www.lios.org/school/currentstudents/welcome.php ] FacultyFeedbackBill and Pam have both been very supportive of me at different stages of my project. Bill helped me figure out a way to save my project that prevented me from having to start over. Both have been responsive to phone calls/emails and it made a big difference to me. GeneralNotesI encourage you to think of this as another opportunity for your learning. One of the greatest surprises for me has been how interesting it is for me to learn how to write in a style (active voice, APA style, clear writing) that I've not experienced before. I also encourage folks to use the End Note software. It continues to be easy to use and I think will make the reference section easy for me. Clearer instructions in Pro-Consult re: what is/isn't an acceptable project. FacultyFeedbackGeneralNotesFollowUp: Yes SecondYearWorkingDetailsI was working full time. Thought many people have done projects at Boeing I chose not too. That decision was part of my "personal journey", not a Boeing policy or anything. As a matter of fact, I intend to do a new project and this time at Boeing to make most use of my time. ThirdYearWorkingDetailsIt was much more than my employment demands that kept me from completing my thesis. My personal growth work was taking the majority of my energy. My Boeing job took the rest. Spending every night and weekend writing the thesis just was not going to happen for me. In addition, in the middle of my third year I experience another intensive piece of "growth" that demanded my time and priorities. To focus on just the work demands seems to miss the larger picture based on my experience. The psychological and emotional work that LIOS engenders continues in the third year. Its a very real impact. Some cope with it better than others, possibly even using the thesis to avoid that work! PriorityFactorsI have put some structure around my personal growth work. Also, I see many opportunities to combine my thesis work with my regular work. Further, where I was not THAT motivated by the credential when in LIOS I have "recovered my senses", see the reality of American life, and now know that for some of things I want to do the credential is needed. ImpactOfPolicyChangeIn general I like the change. It has flexibility, the 3rd year LOA, which serves me, and it has additional structure to encourage me to do the work or resign at the end of the LOA. However, I am not sure how it applies to me since it was implemented after my Module 7. WhatWouldMotivateMeNot sure - given the more or less unique nature of the LIOS program, with its combination of personal work and formal work, and having the seen the dramatic reaction to imposed structure both in my class, my predecessor class and having heard about it the class that followed, I think this is very challenging problem. Balancing the students growth needs, including significant reparenting in many cases, with all the implications for authority relations, with the formal structure typically used to "encourage" on time performance, poses a truly creative problem. I had several classmates,as you do I am sure, that are life time over achievers and yet did not finish their thesis by the December following module 7. Why? I think its mostly because they were fully engaged by the personal work and may have even been, as is my case, in rebellion against structure. That being part of the authority stuff. I think the new policy is a good starting point. WhatAlreadyMotivatedMe

FacultyFeedbackSome sort of change in the process that "forces" people to do the lit review before the intervention. This could be a gate review and part to the 2nd year assessment process. If you have not written that chapter (at least in draft) you are dropped 2 grades. If this is a going in expectation right from the intial interview, then I think it would be ok. If imposed mid year, BOOM GeneralNotesFor me the emotional and psychological learning that came from my LIOS experience is far and away its greatest gift. Whatever changes are please keep that aspect of LIOS always in the forefront. I am succeeding post-LIOS where I failed dramatically pre-LIOS. The MA is not the reason. And still, I support the efforts to improve the graduation rate. There is even more learning to be gained. FollowUp: Yes SecondYearWorkingDetailsI sold my business so I could concentrate fully on school. ThirdYearWorkingDetailsPriorityFactorsI was highly motivated. One, that's just my personality. I like to meet or exceed expectations. Two, I new that my MTP client engagement had a shelf-life. The longer I waited to write it up, the less potent were my memories of the experience. I did not want to minimize the learning and thus the quality of the paper. I think that was the most important motivation. ImpactOfPolicyChangeI'm glad to see this tightening of the policy. Though it would probably not have changed my experience at all, it may have increased the number of my colleagues who were present at graduation day with me, and my SC friends. It was a tad lonely, I must admit, to be the only one from our class present at commencement. And I worry that many of my classmates who put in so much time and effort with me won't complete the process at all. WhatWouldMotivateMe
WhatAlreadyMotivatedMeAs I said before, I was highly motivated as a point of personality. To me, it was as if I had signed a contract to finish in two years when I entered the program. In my heart, I would have let myself down, as well as my mentors on the faculty--including my adjunct. With that said, I realize that my circumstances were completely different without the added pressure of full time employment, but I know I would have still made the same attempt. ThirdYearWantsI've made myself available to classmates for consultation in their projects--particularly if they had to start new client engagements. FactorsWithinMyControlSelf discipline. Fear of failure. Desire to meet or exceed the standard. (At the time) Desire to begin working immediately after school was finished. FactorsWithinLIOSControlI think LIOS does what it needs to do. This is all about us hunkering down and getting the work done. It's painful. But it's doable. Carolyn Righi, my classmate completed it on time, working full time for Boeing, and traveling to St. Louis for 6 weeks at a time on business trips. This is about the level of personal commitment for each student--and the grace of the universe in providing a project that doesn't get de-railed by something out of his or her control (like a sponsor being fired or becoming ill, or the like). FacultyFeedbackI think it was great that Pam created a timeline for both the curriculum work and the thesis. I think there could be more discussion about the process of writing the thesis. I was very surprised that I wasn't able to just sit down and write it. There has been alot of reflection, research and just plain resistance to this project. I'm thinking that if some people might have come in say Mod 5 or 6 and sat down and said here are my expereriences in writing my thesis, I might have expected something a little different. GeneralNotesThe thesis is the academic rigor in what I call the group hug world. It is a real adjustment, requiring alot of discipline. It's been a bigger growing experience for me not to make the deadline, than if I would have, as strange as that may sound. At the end of the day, I want my thesis process to be as profound? useful? as the rest of the program. And that is what surprised me. FollowUp: Yes SecondYearWorkingDetailsI left my job in December of my first year at LIOS. I was burned out at work and I knew how demanding the 2nd year was going to be. My action research project was focused on low on-time graduation rates. I had heard from the 2nd years (at that time) how demanding it would be. I still will not finish my thesis on time, mostly because of a personal "crisis" that started this summer and that is still taking a lot of my time. Although I have tried not to sacrific my school and my thesis. ThirdYearWorkingDetailsPriorityFactorsI marked "on time" above, but I will not be able to graduate "on time". Our final product (thesis) is due on October 17, before Module 7 even begins. I tried hard to get as much of my thesis done as I could, but then recognized that there would be no way that I could complete it by the date. I gave myself some grace and took some of the pressure off. I have made a commitment that despite the fact that I won't be able to graduate with my class, I will have my thesis completed by December. One, it gets harder to write the further away from the project that I get. Two, I want to have it "off my back". I want to end this year saying I am done with all the work I have to do at LIOS. I mentioned my "personal crisis" in the above question, that marked the level of priority I could give my thesis. Also, the 2nd year is so much work that I was a little burned out and I have had ongoing work that I've had to do for modules that had to take priority over the thesis as well. My project also didn't flow with the suggested timeline and only ended a few weeks ago. In the real world, most consulting projects will take longer than the time that was alloted for our MTPs. If we're doing an MTP in the real world, that needs to be recognized by the faculty. Any hiccup or problem with the client group and you fall off the timeline. Factors that would increase my motivation: I recognize that I'm an adult, but it might have been helpful for faculty to check our progress on the actual writing . During pro-consult, we discussed our projects, but there wasn't a real push to start writing. My recommendation for the current 1st years is to start writing some of your thesis as it happens. I could have written a lot starting in April, but put it off until my project was complete which wasn't until the end of September. ImpactOfPolicyChangeThe policy did not influence me. I made it a personal goal to have my thesis complete by the end of this year. I do not want to have anything hanging over my head as I get back in the work force. I also think that completing by December is the completion of my work at LIOS and I want to say that I did do the full program in two years even if I could not graduate on time. WhatWouldMotivateMeAt least a recognition by the faculty that most projects do not follow the timeline given for the MTP. The "real world" does not revolve around this timeline. I'm not sure what the could do about it, but it's an important factor in low on-time graduation rates. As I stated before, the faculty could check in not only with the progress of the MTP, but also with the thesis writing. What would they do if the project was taking "too long"? What are their personal recommendations for writing? Also recognizing the amount of work that is given to the 2nd years. I'm not complaining about the curriculum, I enjoyed it greatly, but we constantly had projects and papers taking place, that took a lot of time to complete. I don't know another time for our PTPs to be written, but that took a great deal of my time during the summer as it was one of the most important papers that I could write. WhatAlreadyMotivatedMeI mentioned above that although I will not make the October 17 deadline for thesis completion, I will have my thesis complete by December. The factors for my motivations are listed in 3c. ThirdYearWantsI'm probably in this category because I won't graduate on time. I'm not sure how to answer this question. I know that the current 3rd years, really used the listserv to discuss their projects and thesis. Our class did not. I'm curious of the dynamics of our class and the listserv that made this forum less useable. Probably the greatest service to me will be continued contact with the peers in my group that are my support system. Also my internal motivation is the greatest support I have for completing my thesis. FinishedAppreciated
FactorsWithinMyControlAlthough my project was not complete, I could have started writing earlier. The push or drive for me to do it was within my control, but with all the other stuff in my world, including LIOS work, I did not connect with my drive until September to finish my thesis. FactorsWithinLIOSControlSee 3d. FacultyFeedbackI think I've answered this one in questions 3 and 4. Let me know if you need more GeneralNotesI had vaguely heard about it at the beginning of this year. I think through an email by LIOS admin. It was not pushed by the faculty at all. It might have been helpful, I don't know. I'm more interested now as I get into the consulting field than it would have during first of the year. The year was so busy that I barely had time to meet with my mentee, let alone take advantage of this program. FollowUp: Yes SecondYearWorkingDetailsI spent much of my second year working on a project in Alaska that required extensive travel. Between scheduled Alaska work and LIOS modules in Washington, there were relatively few unscheduled days that I could commit to my MTP in Oregon. ThirdYearWorkingDetailsI made a decision not to complete my thesis and instead focus on my wedding and marriage in September. While work demands were an influence, this personal decision was key. PriorityFactorsI believe the MTP as currently structured is primarily aligned to the goal of creating "scholar practitioners" in consulting. The APA format and the prescriptive requirements of using action research approach are in line with this goal. However, this was neither an explicitly state goal in any of the materials I reviewed or interviews I had before starting LIOS. It doesn't happen to be a personal goal of mine. I don't agree that working towards excellence as a practitioner requires a traditional academic approach. I agree and support the LIOS goal of establishing and maintaining high standards for the work of students in the program. I simply do not believe that the current approach in the MTP is the only or best way to reach for such standards. ImpactOfPolicyChangeI believe this policy reflects some deeply held assumptions within LIOS about why students do or don't complete their thesis projects. My bias is that even the action research projects associated with this topic have been pretty narrowly defined in ways that simply support existing assumptions. It might be interesting to ask students who have completed their thesis what they gained by doing so, whether or not the process was as much in service to their learning as they'd hoped, to what degree they experienced writing the thesis as a formality to get their degree, etc. While the thesis is a priority to LIOS, and I can't get my degree without it, the clients I have in my consulting practice aren't much concerned with my status as a scholar and are far more interested in how I show up as a practitioner. During my pro-consult, we extensively discussed how our master's project could be combined with our practitioner theory paper to create a master's thesis that would be a very personal, very in-depth examination of who we were as practitioners, what we believed and acted on, what theories we tended to use, how things showed up in our projects, etc. This would clearly be a much more personal document, and would fit the APA format at all. In my mind, however, this would create a 75-100 page foundation for describing our "signature presence" in a powerful way. While it might have taken me as many hours to create such a document as it will to do my MTP, my bias is that the pay-off for me as a practitioner and for potential practitioners reading my "theory of practice" would be far greater than what I'm writing now. WhatWouldMotivateMeI know from talking to the accredidation body that it is NOT required that LIOS students complete a thesis in APA format. I would like LIOS faculty to think carefully about what purpose they believe should be served by the master's project. Is the purpose really specifically to practice action research only? Could the purpose be stated in terms of what the student should be able to do in connection with the project and then have the student decide which models or approaches meet those outcomes and their particular circumstances best? What is the purpose of writing up the project? Is it mostly about prospective students? Is it mostly so companies and other schools see LIOS has an "academic" approach? Is it mostly about harvesting learning? What type of write up makes sense depends very much on the answers to those questions. And when those questions are answered, it would be nice if LIOS marketing materials and student recruitment and screening process was consistent with what faculty are actually doing in the program. FactorsWithinMyControlDeciding the credential is more important to me than other things I could be doing with the 10-20 days of time that writing up the thesis will take me. It was never hard for me to see the sense in making the time I spent on the project itself a priority - I had huge learning every step of the way. FactorsWithinLIOSControlUnlike counseling, in which payment is directly tied to being "authorized" and credentialed to do the work, both consulting and coaching are not currently as boxed in by required credentials. While many settings do want and ask for an academic foundation for these functions, many other settings accept effectiveness and excellence as a "credential". If LIOS intends to recruit and train consultants/coaches primarily for settings in which credentials matter, then it might be a good idea to sort this out, make it explicit, and say it is about making students scholar/practitioners in OD settings. FacultyFeedbackI understand the faculty assumption that part of the learning is to work things out with their adjunct as they complete the thesis. However, in the absence of clear institutional expectations of what a student should be able, at a minimum, to ask of an adjunct, it seems to me that there is huge variation among faculty and among adjuncts in views of what is reasonable for an adjunct to do or not do. While this intensely personal decision re: role is very much in keeping with academic culture, I saw myself as a 40-something person paying appx. $30,000 for an educational experience, and I wanted LIOS to put some boundaries on expectations of adjuncts and other faculty re: simple things like should a student be able to expect someone to call them back in a couple days, a couple weeks, a month, if they felt like it, or never? I interpreted having most staff at LIOS seemingly get to define all this personally as a problem for me. GeneralNotesI'm curious about whether anyone has looked at why rates of thesis completion are a problem and who they are a problem to. Has anyone interviewed people who haven't completed their thesis and asked them what the impact of not completing the thesis has been, in other words, what "pain" has been attached to not completing. Is this a problem for the institution and, if so, why? If this a problem for recruiting incoming students? What is the benefit, and who will get it, if suddenly 100% of students complete their MTP's on time? FollowUp: Yes SecondYearWorkingDetailsI work full time either in the field for NOLS or with consulting clients. I adjusted this during the period I worked in my MTP client system. MY work load has increased enough that I will not complete the written part of my thesis. ThirdYearWorkingDetailsPriorityFactorsMy work load, my work at NOLS put me in a backcountry setting with a pack, students and a full daily schedule. In addition I have been dealing with family medical issues. ImpactOfPolicyChangeIt just seems to me a way of collecting $ and increasing a persons cost. A very cookie cutter approach, not something we want to do with our clients. Irritated. It almost seems punitive in nature. WhatWouldMotivateMeNone, I wanted to complete my thesis by October. My MTP went well and I was done by mid May. To many family issues to deal with and work ramped up. WhatAlreadyMotivatedMe

Faced with my first year of working during the summer when my children were not in school, I decided to postpone writing my thesis. Bad decision. ThirdYearWorkingDetailsEmployment, financial, and family responsibilities have continued to mount since my last module, almost as if they had been kept at bay while I was at LIOS, and rushed in to fill the "vacuum" when curriculum ended. Carving out time to complete my thesis seems impossible. PriorityFactorsSingle parenthood, financial responsibilities, increasing responsibilities and satisfaction at work influence the priority level. Money and the approaching deadline would increase my ability and motivation. ImpactOfPolicyChangeUsing the stick instead of the carrot feels punitive. Rather than negative financial incentives I would like to see benchmarks for thesis completion imbedded in the curriculum - ample time for literature review prior to beginning the MTP, draft Chapters due by certain dates, etc. What you need to focus on is changing a norm. WhatWouldMotivateMeI have no comment at this time. WhatAlreadyMotivatedMe

FactorsWithinMyControlStaying in touch with LIOS faculty and students in ongoing relationships. Implementing LIOS knowledge and skills in my job is when I get excited about working on my thesis, and hearing of others' progress and success. FactorsWithinLIOSControlHow about a continuing pro-consult formed around the writing process? FacultyFeedbackI haven't had any personal contact with Pam since the end of module 7, even when I have responsed to her requests on the listserve. Continued relationship with her would have been motivating. GeneralNotesRedesign of 2nd year curriculum flow. Begin work on Practitioner Theory early on so students will have their theory as a resource during the MTP process. Combine change management with MTP to consolidate research and provide practical experience. Move MTP back a bit in the year. Have specific due dates for completion of certain stages of thesis preparation (lit review) and writing. FollowUp: Yes SecondYearWorkingDetailsI worked the first year, but not the second, so it doesn't apply. ThirdYearWorkingDetailsPriorityFactorsI spent a lot of time working on my own personal development issues necessary for me to develop in order to be a competent practitioner. Also, I only recently completed the MTP due to sponsors going on vacation, as well as starting the thesis project later. ImpactOfPolicyChangeAlthough, I was motivated to finish before, I was even more determined to finish at an earlier date. This is due to the financial aspect of registering each subsequent quarter. WhatWouldMotivateMeNothing would motivate me now, as I am already motivated. However, earlier into the program there should be more learning opportunities provided at LIOS to give students like me (with less consulting related work experience) more working knowledge. By this I mean other consulting experiences prior to the MTP or internships. WhatAlreadyMotivatedMe
ThirdYearWantsI think that having a coaching relationship with the adjunct would help. But I also think that this depends upon the individual student and adjunct in developing this relationship. Also, I think it would be supportive to get more help in getting a thesis project (how, where, when) with a motivated client. This is so the project starts on time. Since I started the project late it ended later as well. FinishedAppreciated
FactorsWithinMyControlI think that working to be on schedule with the project is important to the completion of the project. In addition, it is important to have a motivated client and be motivated yourself. Furthermore, I think that making sure to put the thesis project and thesis ahead of other responsibilities aids in the completion of the project. FactorsWithinLIOSControlI think that there is a difference between completing the thesis project and the thesis. I think it is crucial to have the thesis project completed or almost completed in order to start the paper. I think starting the project earlier would be helpful because I don't think the timeline that we are given is realistic with most clients. FacultyFeedbackI think that the second year is overly demanding. There is a large discrepancy between the amount of coursework the first year and the second year. I think that the coursework needs to be more balanced. Also, I think it needs to be balanced between personal growth work and coursework. In addition,I think starting the thesis the first year would be helpful. I also think that there should be other learning labs within LIOs, as well as other options besides the thesis. Furthermore, I think that theis completion comes down to individual choices and individual practitioner development. Although, finishing the project late is one reason I haven't completed the thesis yet. the other reason is because I have focused on my own development as a person and as a practitioner. Being a competent practitioner is another requirement in order to graduate. GeneralNotesI made the choice not to participate with the mentoring program because I live far away. But if I knew more about it maybe I would have changed my mind. My second year mentor from last year has been very helpful to me this year. FollowUp: Yes SecondYearWorkingDetailsI have not been working this year and have had time to work on the thesis but have chosen not to at times as I needed a break from thinking/writing about it all. ThirdYearWorkingDetailsPriorityFactorsMy biggest issue has been around being motivated to complete the writing portion of the thesis. At this point, I'm having senioritis and wanting school to be over...diving back in to write the thesis has been challenging as I spent so much time thinking about it that I'm sort of over it...even though the writing process itself is a learning experience. PriorityFactorsPersonal principle - I finish everything I set out to do. Financial investment. Desire to have a degree. It would have increased my motivation to have some kind of support structure provided by LIOS - a monthly pro-consult with benchmarks for all of us to stick with (just like it was for all other work we had to complete at lios). Also, having a more clear idea of how to go about putting my degree to work.
