Managers vs. Leaders

cf.: Leaders vs. Elders from Sitting in the Fire

Managers Leaders
administer innovate
focus on systems and structure focus on people
relies on control inspires trust
short-range view long range perspective
asks how and when asks what and why
keep an eye on the bottom line keep an eye on the horizon
imitate originate / create
accepts the status quo changes status quo
the classic good soldier their own person
does things right does the right thing

Leadership is a full-time job, and those who try to be both managers and leaders simultaneously often find it quite difficult to do either job very effectively.
