Self Soothing

  1. Don’t take other’s behavior personally
    Keep neocortex in gear
    * Focus on breathing *
    Stop talking
    Catch your breath.
  2. Give the dilemma purpose and meaning.
    What do I need to learn?
    What coping resources do I have?
    What similar challenges have I faced successfully in the past?
  3. If you can’t regulate your emotions, control your behavior
  4. Stop mental tapes (“Awfulizing the situation”)
  5. Take a time-out
  6. Self care

Self Soothing does not involve self indulgence, emotional regression, or food/substance binging.
